The “Halo 3: ODST” campaign is an intriguing side story that takes place during the terrifying events leading up to the Master Chief’s return to New Mombasa in “Halo 3.” Experience the fate of Earth from the brand-new perspective of a special forces ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), adding a unique outlook and new gameplay elements to the events that unfold in the trilogy’s finale. While the feel of this new chapter will greatly resemble that of previous “Halo” experiences, “Halo 3: ODST” will require players to employ more elements of stealth and cunning than ever before.

The game developers were adamant about having rain during the night time New Mombassa streets segments. However, the engineers could not implement rain into the engine. It was left up to the audio department to alter the game's sound effects to provide the "feel" that it had rained earlier while you're wandering around alone as the Rookie.
The game was originally named ''Halo 3: Recon'', but on November 25, 2008, Bungie announced that they renamed the game to ''Halo 3: ODST'', because the players play as Orbital Drop Shock Troopers in the game

During game play the characters will occasionally reference dialogue from the Firefly(2002) series such as "the 'verse" and "gorram it!"
Adam Baldwin's character while holding a rocket launcher can sometimes be heard yelling; "Here's Vera!". This is a reference to Joss Whedon's Firefly, as Baldwin's character also had a large gun named "Vera".
