Michael Clarke Duncan was originally intended to play Ben King, reprising the role from the first game. He passed away very early on in the voice recording process, however, and the role was recast. At one point during the credits, however, is a moment where the entire voice cast sings along to Biz Markie's "Just a Friend." Duncan had completed the recording for that and thus is heard along with the rest of the cast as a tribute; towards the end of the song, the various cast members' voices all fade out leaving only his to finish the song.

Keith David: I was twelve hours into Dead Island when the Zin attacked. Now I'll never finish. I won't forgive them for that.

In gameplay, the player can be heard saying sometimes after killing someone, "I am the one who knocks!" This could be a reference to Walter White's quote in Breaking Bad (2008).
The name of the mission "Nytefall" is a reference to Batman comic storyline "Knightfall" wherein Batman is temporarily crippled by Bane and has someone else fill in for him.
The mission "He Lives" is a reference to the movie They Live. Not only is the name a parody of the film, but both the game and the movie star Roddy Piper and Keith David, both feature a fight that starts in an alley, and Keith David is designed after his character, Frank Armitage, from the movie.
Most of the weapon skins found when upgrading your weapon have movie or TV show references tied to them.
In the clothing store "Let's Pretend" is an outfit called the "Craft Miner." This is a nod to Minecraft. The outfit is blocky, like the graphics in Minecraft, and the outfit name itself is a play on the title.
If the player goes to a store called "Let's Pretend" and shoots a certain door, it will open, revealing a secret passage downstairs. The room contains the developer's heads, and if they are all shot, a gun called "Tiny Pistol" will appear. If fired, the gun will push you backwards. This is a reference to the gun "Noisy Cricket" from Men in Black, which when fired will also push you back.
Sometimes when talking to Keith David, he will say "I was 12 hours into Dead Island when the Zin attacked. Now I'll never finish. I won't forgive them for that." Saints Row IV was distributed by Deep Silver, who also published Dead Island.
