Set in the cold blackness of deep space, the atmosphere is soaked with a feeling of tension, dread and sheer terror. In Dead Space, players step into the role of engineer Isaac Clarke – an ordinary man on a seemingly routine mission to fix the communications systems aboard a deep space mining ship. It is not long before Isaac awakes to a living nightmare when he learns that the ship’s crew has been ravaged by a vicious alien infestation. He must fight through the dead silence and darkness of deep space to stay alive.

The silent protagonist (player character) Isaac Clarke is named after two science-fiction writers, Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke.

This game was reportedly banned in China and Japan because of the game's excessive gory violence involving, several dismemberments that the player character can perform on the enemies. However, it has since been confirmed that this was a marketing ploy, and that the game was not banned in any country.

This game is dedicated to the German public relation of marketing staff Christian Teichmann, who passed away before this game was released

To come up with ideas for the Necromorph enemies, developers studied the carnage of car wrecks. Ideas for the scares were conceived by watching various horror movies

Easter Eggs

There's an achievement called "Live With the Hot Ones" for setting enemies alight with the flame thrower. This is a direct reference to an obscure line in the EA code of conduct. Every employee at EA is contractually obligated to "Live With the Hot Ones". No one had any idea what it meant, so it became something of an in-joke at EA.

If the main menu screen is left up for long enough, a cinematic of the game's death scenes will play to a very startling rendition of the song "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star."
