In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now. Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Trivia

It has been revealed that a sequel is in development but red Barrels have stated that they will not release a game unless they themselves are afraid to play it

The concept for the game came from Aphex Twin's "Rubber Johnny" video.

Although you never speak your voice can be heard in his screams, breaths and gasps

The main characters entire name "Miles" is a reference to the term "miles up shore without a paddle", meaning that he is in too deep to return.

As Miles' name was never revealed to other characters, each of them assigns him with a different name, some of them being "little pig" by Walker, "buddy" by Trager and "my son" by Martin.

It was originally planned for Miles to have been sexually assaulted at some point in the game. This was later scrapped by the developers as they've considered the scene to be excessive.

Quotes

Richard Trager "Hey, you're that little shit priest's guy aren't you? His... witness or whatever. You must be exhausted. Lets take a break, huh, buddy? The old two martini lunch, have a little confab."

The Twins"His tongue and his liver. Yours. Mine."

Chris Walker "You were here, weren't you? Little pig. I'll find all of you whores."

Stephenson "They killed us. They got out. The Variants."

Father Martin "I... I see. Merciful God, you have sent me an Apostle. Guard your life, son, you have a calling."

Easter Eggs

In the small shed in the courtyard, the outline of a chainsaw on a shelf can be seen. This is a reference to the movie Evil Dead 2, in which the main character, Ash, reaches for a chainsaw in a shed, only to find an outline of it instead.
